BT are well known for their home phone service in the UK but not so well known for their web hosting which is a new service that BT recently moved into. BT’ Web Hosting is a little more advanced for newbie’s and is not like the standard web hosting that we are used to. Being a big, well reputated company in the UK they will never be short of customers.
Customer Support at BT is 24/7 which is suprising although call terms are erratic during peak times so you may prefer to stick with live chat. During our tests calls were andwered in as little as 30 seconds some days and as long as 45 minutes other days. Most email responses were effective and helpful taking no longer than one hour.
BT offers a control panel with every plan which was built and developed by them. BT’s control panel does lack some standard web hosting features cPanel offers, but is nicely laid out and has some usefull features and nice web builder. You will still find the same scripts within their free library of blogs and shopping carts but when we last visited we found that many of these were out of date meaning a manual update is required after the install.
BT is not cheap in comparison with some of our bigger UK and US web hosts, at 5 per month there are plenty of better deals out there. Some people though have gained a lot of respect with BT and will choose them over any other host because of the name. Unfortunately eve at ã5 per month you can’t expect unmetered disk space and bandwidth, this is only available on the professional plan charge at a massive 15 a month!
BT’s offers UK based servers meant for UK companies that require their website to be hosted in the UK for speed and performance for their UK audience. That said, we have had many reviews from clients complaining of poor uptime and slow speeds. Although we haven’t experienced too many blackouts with them we are currently monitoring them around the clock and will update you here with updates.
BT have always offered basic web hosting, this used to be free with your internet connection however the costs were too high for BT and they started to realise the potential to make much better revenue selling web hosting as a service. Right now there is lots of room to improve and only time will tell if they can become a major force in the web hosting industry. It is a shame that BT offer no money back guarantee, so far we have had mixed reviews but we’re positive BT will start improving their plans, adding guarantees and better features.
